Gilgit-Baltistan marked its 78th Independence Day on November 1, 2025, with grand celebrations across all ten districts of the region. The day commemorates the historic liberation from Dogra rule in 1947. During that time, the brave Gilgit Scouts led a successful rebellion that paved the way for the region’s accession to Pakistan. This year’s celebrations reflected unprecedented enthusiasm, unity, and a renewed commitment to Pakistan’s sovereignty.
The main Independence Day ceremony took place at Yadgar Shuhada Chinar Bagh in Gilgit. Governor Syed Mehdi Shah, Chief Minister Haji Gulbar Khan, and Commander Force Command Northern Areas (FCNA) Major General Syed Imtiaz Hussain Gilani jointly unfurled the national flag during the ceremony. Provincial ministers, the Chief Secretary, the Inspector General of Police, and several senior civil and military officials were also present on the occasion. Their presence reflected the strong unity between the civilian leadership and the security forces.
During the flag-hoisting ceremony, officials laid floral tributes at the memorial of martyrs who sacrificed their lives for the region’s freedom. The GB Police armed forces presented a guard of honor, while emotional tributes were paid to the heroes of the 1947 liberation movement, particularly the Gilgit Scouts who played a pivotal role in overthrowing Dogra rule.
Historic Significance and Sacrifices
On November 1, 1947, local forces under the leadership of the Gilgit Scouts arrested Brigadier Ghansara Singh, the governor appointed by Maharaja Hari Singh of Jammu and Kashmir. This military action marked the beginning of Gilgit-Baltistan’s freedom from centuries of oppressive Dogra rule. The region’s forefathers fought against a far superior and better-equipped enemy force, yet their determination and courage prevailed, creating a unique chapter in military history.


Governor Syed Mehdi Shah, in his address, emphasized the extraordinary sacrifices made by the region’s forefathers and the Gilgit-Baltistan Scouts. He praised the brave people of this mountainous region for securing their own freedom and showing unwavering loyalty to Pakistan from the very beginning. Chief Minister Haji Gulbar Khan shared similar views, noting that the people of Gilgit-Baltistan liberated a vast territory without external assistance—setting a remarkable example in military history.
Commander 10 Corps Lieutenant General Shahid Imtiaz highlighted that the contributions of Gilgit-Baltistan’s people didn’t end with independence. The brave soldiers and citizens of the region have played unforgettable roles in defending Pakistan’s geographical and ideological borders. Their courage was especially evident during the wars of 1965, 1971, and the Kargil conflict of 1999.
Celebrations Across the Region
The Independence Day festivities extended beyond the capital city. Similar celebrations also took place in Skardu, Ghanche, Shigar, Kharmang, Astore, Diamer, Ghizer, Hunza, and Nagar districts. The government declared a public holiday across the region, encouraging citizens to take part in commemorative events. People across Gilgit-Baltistan illuminated buildings with colorful lights. Meanwhile, banners, national flags, and pictures of national heroes decorated streets, homes, and offices.
A spectacular Independence Day parade took place at the Army Helipad in Gilgit. The event also featured contingents from the Pakistan Army, Northern Light Infantry (NLI) Centre, GB Scouts, Women Police, GB Police, Punjab Rangers, and the Special Communications Organization (SCO). In addition, cadets from Skardu and Chilas proudly participated in the parade.The parade highlighted the region’s military strength and discipline. Commandos impressed the crowd with thrilling heli-fly passes and free-fall jumping demonstrations that captivated everyone present.
Cultural programs played a major role in the celebrations. Students from across Gilgit-Baltistan presented national and regional patriotic songs. They also performed traditional dances that highlighted the region’s rich cultural heritage. Paragliding performances added an exciting dimension to the festivities. Meanwhile, locals organized polo competitions—the region’s traditional sport—in various areas. Food stalls and exhibitions of local handicrafts provided attendees with opportunities to experience Gilgit-Baltistan’s diverse cultural traditions and exceptional craftsmanship.

Gilgit-Baltistan holds immense strategic importance for Pakistan because it lies at the crossroads of South Asia, Central Asia, and China. Moreover, the China-Pakistan Economic Corridor (CPEC) passes through Gilgit-Baltistan, and therefore the region plays a crucial role in Pakistan’s economic development and regional connectivity.
